In a typical Viking workshop, the children will be introduced to ‘Erik, the Green’ who will teach them that:

Erik is ‘Green’ in the modern sense, because he is fully resourced using natural materials and lives sustainably.

‘Viking’ is a verb, like ‘hiking’.

Norsemen are both raiders and traders but aspire to the latter. Erik explains why he goes raiding and the different ways it can be done with minimum bloodshed.

Erik then shows off his fully authentic clothing and his kit and explains why these things show that he is experienced and wealthy.

The children all have an opportunity to handle and examine Erik’s shield and weapons.

Erik passes around the contents of his satchel.

Erik then lights a fire from a spark, the Viking way.

The children try to make sparks using a mediaeval flint and steel.

In his pouch, Erik has toys for his children. The children make a Viking age toy of their own to take back to school. Alternatively, there is an option to weave a Viking age braid to take away.

This is usually accompanied by a Viking myths and legends tour, during which the children discover the relevance and importance of Wildwood’s animals and their place in Norse mythology and culture.
